Screening Log: Weekend of 9 December 2011
1. The Sitter (2011, David Gordon Green) Review forthcoming. No, it’s not terrible, but Green’s awfully close to going from faux-hack to actual hack. [theatrical screening]
2. The latest Community (and its last?) and Parks and Rec [Hulu]
3. The Adventures of Tintin (2011, Steven Spielberg) Might review this, but short version: pleasant but powerfully slight. Has peaks (dug the one-take falcon chase, natch), but not enough of them. Weirdly enough, I feel about the same about this as I do War Horse. [advance screening]
4. Shit Year (2011, Cam Archer) Don’t have time to go into this, but, yes, I’m a fan, of both the film and Ellen Barkin’s performance. It’s still too miniature, but arresting and eccentric, anyway. [screener]
5. Leap Year (2010, Michael Rowe) Actually, this is more like my 1 1/2 time seeing it. Caught it last year but, on account of having a fun panic attack prior and popping a Xanax, I wound up passing out. Although, weirdly, I only slept during the parts where nothing happened — over half the movie — and awoke only when something happened, meaning I got the gyst and could explain the plot to you after but still missed the film’s essence. Anyway, it’s much better and a lot less powerfully obvious when you, uh, actually watch it. FYC: Monica del Carmen and the crazy “will you stab me?”/hand job scene. [Netflix Instant]
6. About 2/3 of In the Electric Mist (2009, Bertrand Tavernier) Was having pesky internet problems, otherwise I would have finished this (which I’m watching for “Undies ‘09” consideration; others doing the same should note this is on Instant). [Netflix Instant]
