Screening Log: 6 February 2012
1. And Everything is Going Fine (2010, Steven Soderbergh) Deceptively simple idea — structure a narrative using Spalding Gray footage (though none from his theatrical movies) — that’s calmly moving in a way Gray would have appreciated. Doesn’t strive for explanation, but does hint at same by including discussion of mental illness and suicide in the family and a sober obsession with death. [Netflix Instant]
2. Mona Lisa (1986, Neil Jordan) This is one of those brightly lit neo-noirs that’s easier to respect than love. Semi-downer ending for one character very ’80s. And yes, that’s The Wire’s Clarke Peters as a killer pimp. [Netflix Instant]
